Track Review: Spring Silver "Set Up A Camera"
What originated as a solo project, Spring Silver is an exploration of DC multi-instrumentalist K Nkanza (they/she). K spent two years writing, recording, and arranging music at home and released a 12 track full length album titled The Natural World, which features collaborations with Two-Inch Astronaut and Space Phase. K has just released their newest single titled Set Up A Camera.
The track starts us off with a simple, yet powerful drum introduction by Theo Hartlett [he/him] (Ovlov, Pet Fox), and a calm vocal melody by K. About 40 seconds in we are introduced to a very “spacey” synth that lets us know we are about to go on a ride. “Recorded over the past few months of quarantine, the track is a balancing act of intricate detail and raw energy,” says K Nkanza. The atmospheric elements that remain constant over the chaotic nature of the guitars is probably a good summation for what’s to follow this release. I truly cannot wait for shows to return so I can see this song performed live. Stream Set Up A Camera below & follow Spring Silver online!
- What is your fondest show/tour memory that comes to mind?
My favorite ever Spring Silver show is one that I played in the basement of a church on American University's campus. Jian Soriano [he/him] (Space Phase) and Sam WR [he/him] (Mister Goblin) were on drums and bass respectively, and we were just having such a fun time. The show was originally supposed to be in a music practice space across the street in the arts building, but it got shut down by the university's faculty. There were a ton of kids and four bands who showed up to have fun and celebrate our friend Wes' birthday. Everyone discreetly went across the street to this church that sometimes held shows in the basement, and we set up and went for it! All of the built up tension from whether or not we'd be able to even play just exploded and everyone went wild! Here's a vid of the event! Check out people couples slow dancing for the final song. So fun.
- Do you have any advice for younger generations of queer/trans youth trying to get into music?
Make the art that you want to make! It's your voice and you have the right to create the art as you see fit! As a matter of fact, it's important you do.
- Dream tour: If you could book yourself on a tour with any 2 artists who would you choose?
I feel like it would be super fun to go on tour with Machinegirl and HXXS. Spring Silver doesn't sound anything like either of them, but the energy for both acts is just through the roof.
