Album Review: Hoofian "Whirling"

From basement jams to Whirling harmonies: Hoofian’s journey.

I had the pleasure of listening to Hoofian’s new EP Whirling, which dropped on Bandcamp today. This isn’t just another release from a talented band; it’s the culmination of years spent honing a sound rooted in friendship and a shared musical vision. The release kicked off with the single Two Truths earlier this week, offering a vibrant mix of melody and poetically nostalgic lyrics. This EP captures a milestone for the band, reflecting the deep bond and creative synergy of its members.

At the center of this dynamic project is the close friendship of Mason Rogers, David Bedford, Mike "Maddog" Davis, and Stevie Dodge. The story behind the band traces back to Rogers and Bedford’s early days in Bayville/Island Heights, New Jersey. Their paths led them to New Brunswick’s DIY scene, where Davis joined in 2014, followed by Dodge in 2018, both becoming integral parts of the band’s journey. With past collaborations in side projects like Gnawed Paw and Phulton, they have all explored different paths but always find their way back to this shared creative space.

The name Whirling fits the EP perfectly. Rogers’ guitar work is fluid and exploratory, with each riff moving thoughtfully between spontaneity and structure, while Bedford’s bass lines are intricately crafted, giving each phrase intention. Davis brings rhythmic precision, expertly using silence and strike to complement the guitar and bass. Dodge, who plays bass during live sets, takes on a studio role here, skillfully engineering, co-mixing with Davis, and mastering the EP to bring it all together.

“The result is an EP that feels like an intimate conversation among friends.”

The result is an EP that feels like an intimate conversation among friends—distinct voices blending in perfect harmony. Hoofian’s sound continues to evolve, yet it remains grounded in the years of collaboration, live performances, and the enduring connection that resonates through every note. Whirling is a testament to the band’s journey, full of warmth, complexity, and the shared joy of creating music together.
