Show Review: HLAG Presents.. A Queer Acoustic Concert Series: Adult Mom, Sug Daniels, Hit Like a Girl + Best Bear
On December 8th, the intimate and DIY atmosphere of the American Football House in Philadelphia hosted a special night of music, community, and queer pride, all part of the HLAG Presents series, which celebrates queer acoustic talent. Organized by the band Hit Like a Girl, this event—under the banner of Homos Love Acoustic Gigs—was a powerful celebration of queer artists and a night to remember.
The evening kicked off with a collaborative set by Hit Like a Girl (Nicolle Maroulis) and Best Bear (Blue Barnett). The two artists alternated songs, blending Hit Like a Girl's punk-infused folk with Best Bear's dreamy indie sounds in a seamless, playful exchange. The dynamic set felt like an intimate conversation between the two, setting an upbeat and inclusive tone for the night.
Next up was Sug Daniels, a folk artist whose warm, soulful voice captivated the room. With their grounded presence and intimate lyrics, Daniels’ set felt like a deep conversation with the audience—each song a chapter in their journey of love, identity, and struggle. They brought up Philly’s own Coco to perform “Leave A Light On” and “Brand New Day.” The raw vulnerability in Sug's voice resonated deeply with the crowd, and the quiet yet profound energy of the room felt like a safe space for everyone to reflect and connect.
The night’s headliner, Adult Mom (Stevie Knipe), returned to the stage for their first performance in over a year after a difficult battle with medical concerns. They opened the set with the song “Passenger” that was the opening track of their full length LP “Driver,” followed by some brand new songs, and some classic hits such as “Survival” and “Be Your Own 3AM.” The crowd’s joy and anticipation were palpable as they delivered an unforgettable performance, marking a triumphant return.
The sense of community and solidarity was palpable at the American Football House. This space, paired with the HLAG Presents series, felt like a celebration of queer art, resilience, and shared love. Each artist brought their own unique flavor to the evening, but it was the deep connection between the performers and the audience that made the night unforgettable. The concert was more than just a show—it was a reminder of how powerful music can be when it’s rooted in authenticity and love.
Overall, it was a night full of emotion, celebration, and unity. In a world where queer voices often go unheard, HLAG Presents provided a beautiful and necessary platform for those voices to soar.
